KMTC Karen Campus Background Information & Location

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) – Karen Campus is one of the 71 constituent campuses of KMTC. It is a center of excellence that focuses mostly in training nutrition and dietetic courses. It is situated in the affluent residential area of Karen, which is about 22 km from Nairobi CBD. The campus sits on a 12.5 acre piece of land about 14 miles south west of Nairobi, facing the Ngong Hills slopes. KMTC Karen campus was founded in 1965 by the Danish Government in honor of Karen Blixen (1885-1962), who is a world-known Danish Author that wrote her books in Danish and English. Karen stayed in Kenya from 1912 till 1931 as a Danish settler. During that time, she established the 6000-acre Karen land with 2000 acres of it remaining untouched. She taught African girls at the Karen House (now Karen Blixen Museum) subjects like basic First Aid, hygiene and food preparation. After Kenya’s independence in 1963, a 36-acre piece of land in the Karen House was donated to the Kenyan Government. The 36 acre piece of land was used to set up Karen Campus. The first African principal of the campus was Rosemary Moraa, who took over the campus in 1976. The institution currently has a student population of 530.
